Guidance for podiatrists in consultant-level practice roles

Description
A framework and principles for understanding, developing and supporting consultant-level roles in podiatry.

Summary
This guidance document outlines the characteristics, expectations and governance considerations for consultant-level roles in podiatry. As part of the wider NHS England Education Reform programme, it supports the Royal College of Podiatry’s ambition to create clear, consistent frameworks that help develop and sustain high-level practice across the profession.

The guidance defines consultant-level practice as practice that is underpinned by expert clinical skills and extended impact across the four pillars of practice: clinical, leadership, education and research. It is intended to support practitioners aiming for consultant-level posts, as well as those responsible for designing, recruiting to, or reviewing such roles.

Key features include definitions of the consultant role profile, examples of how consultant podiatrists lead service innovation, and advice on the supporting infrastructure needed to ensure appropriate development, accountability and job planning. The document also includes reflections from current consultant-level practitioners.

Importantly, this guidance distinguishes consultant practice from advanced and enhanced roles, while recognising the fluidity and complexity of senior clinical practice. It acknowledges the need for robust governance and ongoing CPD, particularly for those who straddle clinical and strategic responsibilities.

The guidance also reinforces the Royal College’s endorsement and credentialing process for consultant roles, helping ensure consistency in how such positions are developed and recognised.

It is a vital reference for boards, employers and strategic leaders who are investing in senior podiatric roles to support transformation, workforce planning and clinical excellence.
