After you apply

Once your application is submitted, the HCPC will process your registration. You cannot practice as a podiatrist until your registration is complete and your name appears on the HCPC register. Check the HCPC register

It can take up to 4 weeks for your application to be processed by the HCPC. HCPC will contact you once you have been added to the register. At this point, you must have insurance in place in order to practice.

Continuing professional development (CPD)

CPD is a requirement for all registered podiatrists. The HCPC conducts random audits of the CPD profiles of those renewing their registration.

Newly qualified podiatrists are exempt from the CPD audit for their first two years of registration, but it's good practice to start recording your CPD activities from the beginning of your career.

The Royal College of Podiatry suggests that practitioners undertake at least 30 hours of CPD a year, of which at least 15 hours should be clinical study.

CPD activities can include:

  • work-based learning such as coaching, mentoring, discussions with colleagues

  • professional activities such as involvement in professional bodies or project work

  • formal activities such as attending conferences, courses or further education

  • self-directed learning such as reading journals or online research

The Royal College of Podiatry provides a digital CPD record system with features to support recording your development.
